Ventura County’s primary water supplier announced plans Monday to begin building a 30-mile pipeline that will carry salty water away from underground basins to improve water quality in the region.

When completed, the 54-inch-diameter line will connect to an existing ocean outfall in Oxnard and allow for the discharge of water with high saline levels and treated municipal waste water.

“The concept is rather simple: We are removing salt from our freshwater supplies and transporting it to the ocean, where it does no harm,” said Calleguas Municipal Water District General Manager Donald Kendall.

The pipeline will be built over 10 years as needs arise throughout Calleguas’ service area, officials said. Construction of the first phase, which will cost $10.8 million, is set to begin next month in southern Oxnard along Hueneme Road.
