Indiana Puts Away Maryland
Indiana needed a third chance to finally beat Maryland.
Eight months after losing to the Terrapins in the national championship game and minutes after having a potential game-winning midcourt heave by Steve Blake waved off, the 10th-ranked Hoosiers beat No. 9 Maryland, 80-74, in overtime on Tuesday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at Indianapolis.
For much of the game, it looked like a replay of April’s championship. Indiana relied on its outside shooting and struggled. Maryland (4-1) again went with its inside power.
But this time Hoosier guard Tom Coverdale was sound. Coverdale, who scored only eight points after being hobbled by a badly sprained left ankle in April, matched his career-high with 30 points in leading the Hoosiers (5-0) back from a 14-point first-half deficit.
Blake had 22 points for Maryland and Ryan Randle had 20.
No. 1 Arizona 91, Saint Louis 58 -- Jason Gardner made four of six three-pointers and scored 16 points to lead the Wildcats (3-0) over the Billikens (1-3) at Tucson.
Gardner, one of three senior starters and a preseason All-American, has made 11 of 17 threes in the first three games for Arizona.
No. 3 Alabama 89, North Carolina Greenboro 61 -- Erwin Dudley had 18 points, Kenny Walker had 17 and Mo Williams had 13 points and seven assists as the Crimson Tide (5-0) defeated the Spartans (3-2) at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Alabama tied a 31-year-old school mark with its 22nd consecutive home win. Nine Crimson Tide players scored at least five points.
No. 4 Duke 91, Ohio State 76 -- Freshman J.J. Redick scored 20 points for the second straight game to lead the Blue Devils (4-0) over the Buckeyes (1-2) in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at Greensboro, N.C.
Redick, who had 20 last Saturday against UCLA, made three three-pointers in the opening 8:40 of the second half.
No. 5 Pittsburgh 96, Norfolk State 51 -- Julius Page scored 16 points to lead the Panthers (4-0) over the Spartans (1-2) at Pittsburgh.
Chevon Troutman had 14 points and Ontario Lett and Donatas Zavackas each scored 13 for Pittsburgh, which led by as many as 39 points in the first half.
West Virginia 68, No. 8 Florida 66 -- Freshman Joe Herber made the go-ahead basket with 50 seconds left as the Mountaineers (3-1) overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half to defeat the Gators (4-2) at Charleston, W.Va.
Drew Schifino scored 16 points and Herber had 11 for West Virginia, which defeated a ranked opponent for the first time in six tries.
No. 11 Connecticut 116, Sacred Heart 78 -- Ben Gordon had career highs with 31 points and 10 assists, and Emeka Okafor had his fourth straight double-double to lead the Huskies (4-0) over the Pioneers (0-4) at Storrs, Conn.
Okafor had 19 points and 14 rebounds for UConn.
No. 25 Illinois 92, No. 12 North Carolina 65 -- Brian Cook scored 22 points and Sean Harrington had a career-high 20 at Champaign, Ill., as the Fighting Illini (4-0) handed the Tar Heels (5-1) their first loss. Harrington was six of eight from three-point range.
