Man Pleads Not Guilty in Slayings of Workers

A Van Nuys parolee pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two counts of murder in last month’s slayings of two auto parts store employees during a dispute over a $20 set of brake pads.
Byron Jackson, 40, has been held without bail at Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles since his Nov. 8 arrest in the fatal shootings of Carlos Avalos, 44, of Van Nuys and Francisco Mercado, 34, of Pacoima.
