Explosions ripped through a McDonald’s restaurant and a car dealership Thursday on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Three people were killed and two others hurt, police said.

The explosions struck an hour apart in the South Sulawesi provincial capital of Ujungpandang, about 900 miles east of Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, said police Sgt. Hidayat, who uses only one name.

Bomb blasts have occurred as part of the running conflict between Muslims and Christians on Sulawesi island. Since 1999, hundreds have died in the fighting.

No one took responsibility for the blasts, Hidayat said, adding that authorities had not ruled out an accidental explosion. Hidayat also refused to say what caused the blast at the car dealership, owned by Indonesian Welfare Minister Yusuf Kalla.

All the victims were at the McDonald’s restaurant in a shopping mall.
