Preemptive Propaganda
In “Iraq Falling Short, Bush Says” (Dec. 3), Vice President Dick Cheney states: “The president knows that wars are never won on the defensive. In the fight against global terror, we must take the battle to the enemy and, where necessary, preempt serious threats before they materialize against our country.”
What in heaven’s name is that supposed to mean? That the two world wars of the 20th century were won because we struck first? This administration depends upon a lack of historical memory when it makes statements like this, hoping that simply saying them will make them true. These statements are false and are served up to justify an already-decided course of action against Iraq.
