EU Candidates Press for Bigger Aid Package
Poland and Malta held out for better membership conditions from the European Union, and other candidates expressed hesitation about the EU’s $40-billion welcome package of aid during talks in Brussels.
The disputes threaten to turn this week’s summit heralding EU expansion into a last-ditch haggling session. Of the 10 candidates, only Slovakia and Cyprus have accepted the EU’s offer.
The union is offering the candidates $40 billion in aid, mostly to farmers, over the first three years of membership. Proportionally, that is less than what the current 15 members got.
