Lights out for Fox’s ‘Firefly’ series

Fox has canceled “Firefly,” the first-year science-fiction series from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon.

The program, expensive to produce by TV standards, was troubled even before its premiere, with Fox opting not to initially air the two-hour pilot and asking Whedon to draft a new one. “Firefly” has drawn low ratings in its Friday time slot.

In a message to fans posted on a Web site, Whedon said he was proud of the show, that the series had been “mistreated shamefully” and that he hoped to find another home for it.

Fox, which like all the networks will make some scheduling changes in January, has yet to settle on a replacement.

The Fox decision means that the network’s two new projects this fall from pedigreed producers both failed to reach 2003, with David E. Kelley’s “Girls Club” having been pulled in November.
