Long-term power contracts signed during California’s energy crisis should be upheld, a federal regulatory judge recommended.

Utilities in California, Nevada and Washington wanted to renegotiate because contracts were agreed to under the pressure of soaring spot energy prices, according to filings with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Judge Carmen A. Cintron said the utilities didn’t prove the connection.

The largest contracts covered in the ruling were signed by Nevada utilities and power companies Nevada Power and Sierra Pacific.
