Ice-Monitoring Satellite Launch Is Delayed
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The launch of NASA’s ICESat spacecraft, a satellite built to measure the Earth’s largest icecaps, has been delayed until January. The mission had been scheduled for launch Thursday.
A review showed that there was a problem with a device that allows the spacecraft’s housing to be detached from the launch vehicle, a Boeing Delta II. The device will be replaced and retested. Launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base is expected to occur after Jan. 8.
