From Times Wire Reports

Closed since Sept. 21, 2001, Philadelphia has permanently shut a one-block section of Chestnut Street in front of Independence Hall to vehicles and pedestrians. The security move has angered business leaders in the busy shopping district.

As recently as last month, Mayor John Street’s office said the closure would not be permanent. But a Street spokeswoman said Friday the city decided to make it permanent.
