Texas Upsets Tennessee on Freshman’s 3-Pointer

Freshman Nina Norman made a three-point basket with 1 second left to give No. 22 Texas a 63-62 upset of No. 4 Tennessee at Austin, Texas, on Saturday.

The win tightens the race to 800 victories between Longhorn Coach Jody Conradt and the Lady Vols’ Pat Summitt.

Norman’s three-pointer gave Texas (6-2) a 63-60 lead, but the Longhorns were assessed a technical foul when they ran onto the court in celebration thinking time had expired.

Tennessee (8-2) cut the lead to one when Kara Lawson made two free throws, but the Lady Vols couldn’t get one last shot off on a cross-court inbounds pass as time expired.

Heather Schreiber scored 18 points for Texas. Lawson had 24 points for Tennessee.

Summitt and Conradt rank 1-2 in career wins in a coaching rivalry that dates back nearly 30 years. Summitt, the winningest coach in women’s basketball, is 796-160 in 29 years. Conradt is 794-260 in 34 seasons.

No. 1 Duke 90, Tulsa 36 -- Iciss Tillis scored 19 points in her hometown as the Blue Devils handed the Golden Hurricane its worst loss in school history at Tulsa, Okla. Alana Beard led Duke (10-0) with 25 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and four assists. Tulsa is 4-6.

No. 2 Louisiana State 91, Southwest Texas 40 -- Temeka Johnson scored all 15 of her points in the first half, leading the undefeated Tigers over the Bobcats at Baton Rouge, La. LSU (9-0) and is off to its best start since 1996-97. Southwest Texas is 1-7.

No. 5 Stanford 69, Boston University 55 -- Chelsea Trotter scored 16 points to lead a balanced attack for the Cardinal at Boston. Stanford (6-1) bounced back from its only loss of the season, a 71-56 setback at No. 4 Tennessee on Wednesday.

No. 6 Purdue 70, No. 19 Boston College 54 -- Shereka Wright scored a season-high 27 points to lead the Boilermakers (8-1) over the Eagles (6-2) at West Lafayette, Ind.

No. 9 Texas Tech 67, Hawaii 40 -- Plenette Pierson scored 16 points as the Red Raiders won the Paradise Classic at Honolulu. The Red Raiders (7-1) shot 44% while holding the Rainbow Wahine (6-3) to just 22%.

No. 12 Notre Dame 82, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 54 -- Courtney LaVere and Alicia Ratay scored 20 points each as the Irish (6-1) beat the Mastodons (2-8) at South Bend, Ind.

Southern Methodist 71, No. 15 Oklahoma 68 -- Andrea Cossey made a game-winning three-pointer with 9 seconds left, leading the Mustangs at Norman, Okla. The loss ended Oklahoma’s 25-game home winning streak.

No. 17 Louisiana Tech 67, New Mexico 54 -- Trina Frierson scored 17 points and Cheryl Ford grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Lady Techsters (7-2) over the Lobos (8-3) at Albuquerque.

Alabama 70, No. 24 Brigham Young 59 -- Beth Vice scored 15 points and led Alabama’s torrid three-point shooting in the first half at Albuquerque. Alabama (8-2) was seven for eight from three-point range in taking a 43-29 halftime lead. BYU is 6-3.

No. 25 Wisconsin Green Bay 80, Fairfield 52 -- Chandra Johnson scored 20 points as the host Phoenix (8-2) celebrated its first national ranking with a rout of the Stags (1-7).
