The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, said it was ready to issue several hundred visas backlogged for at least six months by upgraded security checks.

The visas are “virtually all” applications from Malaysian students wishing to study in the United States.

Education officials in this predominantly Muslim country said in September that U.S. authorities had refused to allow more than 150 Malaysians to return to the United States to complete their college studies because of tightened immigration rules.
