Mayor Richard M. Daley and his wife were hospitalized Friday after fainting at home, doctors said.

Maggie Daley may have broken a rib when she fell, said Dr. David Zull of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The couple were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Both Daleys experienced “fairly violent” vomiting and diarrhea and were being treated for dehydration, said Zull, an emergency room doctor. “They’re resting pretty comfortably.”

Daley spokeswoman Jacqueline Heard said both were being held overnight -- the mayor for observation and his wife for treatment of her rib.

Zull said food poisoning was possible, but it was more likely stomach flu.

Daley, 60, has been hospitalized at least twice since he was elected mayor in 1989. His wife, 59, was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. Zull said her current symptoms appeared to be unrelated to the cancer.

The Daleys were married in 1972 and have four children.
