Eyeing art in Venetian churches

Regarding “The Accidental Treasures of Venice” (Dec. 15): When my husband and I were in Venice for two weeks in May, I visited many churches, just like the author, Madeline King Porter.

The photo of the Madonna dell’Orto brought back memories. I walked there to track down a church mentioned in “Miss Garnet’s Angel” by Salley Vickers, a wonderful novel set in contemporary Venice.

I visited at least 21 churches -- some more than once -- and even then did not see all the ones Porter saw.

My favorite is Santa Maria dei Miracoli, which is small and hard to find. It is covered with slabs of many shades of marble, inside and out.

Another favorite was the Gesuiti (not to be confused with the Gesuati). It is huge and full of green and white marble columns and walls, and it gave me the feeling of being underwater.

There are so many wonderful works of art. I am ready to return and experience the rest of the Venetian churches.
