The financially strapped Irvine Unified School District will receive $500,000 from the local water authority to fund a popular science program for elementary students.

However, the money will have no effect on recently announced school program cuts because the donation, approved by Irvine Ranch Water District directors Monday, was expected and already in the school district’s budget.

The school district expects to cut $5.3 million in services next year, including $1.9 million in specialized science and arts programs for elementary students.
