Scully Receives Two Awards

Vin Scully was a double winner at the 11th annual Southern California Sports Broadcasters awards luncheon Monday at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake.

The Dodger broadcaster was named best play-by-play announcer in television and radio.

It was the eighth time Scully has been named the best in television in the 11 years the awards have been presented, and it was the seventh time he has been named best in radio.

Scully may have won more times, but SCSB bylaws do not allow an announcer to win more than three years in a row.

“I want to salute Chick Hearn,” Scully said after accepting his second award.

“Chick got the greatest gift of all, an extension of his life. God bless him.”

Hearn, a finalist in both play-by-play categories, did not attend because he had a therapy session. Hearn had open-heart surgery Dec. 19.

Other winners included:

* Television analyst: The Lakers’ Stu Lantz, a four-time winner in radio, won for the second time in a row in television.

* Radio analyst: USC commentator Paul McDonald won for the first time.

* Radio talk show host: Irv Kaze of KRLA (870) won for the third time in a row and sixth overall.

* Best news staffs: Channel 2 (TV), KFWB (radio).

In addition to the voted awards, the Kings’ Bob Miller was named to the SBSC’s Hall of Fame; Chuck Benedict, one of the founders of the group, was presented a lifetime achievement award; Ed Roski and the Kings received the High Five award, and Long Beach State Athletic Director Bill Shumard got the Good Guy Award.
