Cathedral Assistant Serves Suspension

Share

Hugo Cepeda, an assistant boys’ soccer coach at Cathedral High, will return to the sidelines today after serving a two-game suspension for throwing an object at a Salesian player during a match on Jan. 25.

Salesian coaches contend that Cepeda, a volunteer assistant, threw a wadded-up piece of athletic tape that hit the back of the head of a Salesian player who had just conducted a throw-in along the Cathedral sideline. Cathedral Coach Arturo Lopez said Cepeda “flicked a [water] bottle cap” at the Salesian player.

The player had uttered a profanity after it appeared that Cepeda intentionally kicked the ball away from him as he retrieved it for a throw-in. Cepeda was issued a red card. Cathedral won, 3-1.
