White House Reopening Tours to Student Groups

Share

The White House will reopen Feb. 15 for tours, but for the time being, groups of up to 1,000 schoolchildren a day will be the only nonofficial visitors at one of Washington’s most popular tourist attractions.

The Executive Mansion, which had hosted about 1 million visitors a year, was closed to the public soon after Sept. 11.

Visiting students will have to comply with one new security wrinkle: providing their Social Security numbers, so that the Secret Service can screen them. In addition, everyone older than 15 will need photo identification. No purses, backpacks or umbrellas will be allowed.

White House officials said they haven’t determined when tours for the general public will resume.
