Joseph Wambaugh’s ‘Changing of the Chief’

Share

Joseph Wambaugh’s Feb. 11 commentary, “Ours Is Not to Wonder Why He Fumbled the Ball,” on the LAPD police chief squabble, is a gem. His experience, common sense and talent blend to convince responsible people. Los Angeles in past years has been blessed with the likes of William Parker and John Alderson as police and fire chiefs. Their leadership helped make their departments the very best in the nation.

Perhaps Mayor James Hahn is showing us he is more than just a chip off the old block. It took courage to be outspoken. A smoother politician may have been quietly influential. Those who are rankled now may find they voted for a diamond in the rough--and be proud to say so down the road. Let us see if the Police Commission and City Council can understand and appreciate Wambaugh’s approach and move onward and upward.
