Justice for the Accused

The U.S. government’s conduct concerning Lotfi Raissi indicates that it is convicting innocent people before proving them guilty (Commentary, Feb. 14). Though this case took place in Britain, hundreds of immigrants are being held in the U.S. indefinitely on petty violations far less than a terrorism accusation. We as Americans pride ourselves on living in a country where justice is applied to all. Denying a person’s day in court and the families’ and attorneys’ right to know where and why he or she is being held is not justice

If Britain believes that the U.S. acted unjustly, it pains me to think what the rest of the world thinks about our justice system. The tragedy of Sept. 11 has taken our loved ones. Let it not also take away our reputation of being the defender of justice and civil rights.
