Two Officers Hurt in Separate Collisions
Two police officers were injured in separate incidents Tuesday after their vehicles were struck by cars whose drivers apparently did not hear sirens, officials said.
“It was a bad night for police cars,” said Sgt. Henry Boggs, a spokesman for the Irvine Police Department.
Irvine Police Officer Alex Mendoza was hospitalized with moderate injuries after being hit about 6 p.m. at Jamboree Road and Walnut Avenue by a sports-utility vehicle that entered the intersection despite the officer’s lights and siren. The second incident was about 9:30 p.m. on Euclid Street near the Santa Ana Freeway in Anaheim. A police car answering an emergency call overturned after being broadsided by another vehicle.
“He’s fine,” Sgt. Randall Brydges, a spokesman for the Anaheim Police Department, said of the officer, whose name was not released.
No occupants of the other cars were injured, police said.
