For the seventh year in a row, El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills won first place in the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Academic Decathlon, the team learned at a banquet Wednesday night.

North Hollywood and Palisades Charter high schools took second and third place in the district competition, which ended 18 days ago with the Super Quiz. They will compete with El Camino and other schools in the California Academic Decathlon on March 22-23 in Modesto.

Other Los Angeles Unified teams that scored high enough to earn wild-card bids at the decathlon were from Venice, Reseda, Los Angeles, Marshall, Garfield and San Pedro highs.

Wednesday’s banquet, held at the downtown Westin Bonaventure hotel, usually takes place a week after the Super Quiz. But problems booking the banquet hall forced the announcements to be pushed back.

Sixty high schools participated in the district’s academic decathlon this year. The intense competition challenges teams of nine students on a variety of subjects, from math to music.

The winner of the state competition will go to the national event April 10-11 in Phoenix.
