A U.S. Air Force general said there was no chance of finding survivors from a helicopter that crashed in a southern Philippine sea with 10 military personnel aboard.

“Based on our best assessment . . . we have determined that there is no chance that we will find survivors,” Brig. Gen. Donald Wurster, chief of Special Forces of the U.S. Pacific Command, told reporters in the southern city of Zamboanga.

Three bodies were recovered shortly after the predawn crash Friday in the Bohol Sea.

The MH-47 Chinook crashed while flying back to its temporary base near Cebu after ferrying troops and supplies from Zamboanga to Basilan island. U.S. forces are training local troops to fight the Abu Sayyaf rebels in the region.
