Credit Card Leads Police to Escaped Texas Killer
An escaped Texas murderer was arrested at a Raleigh motel almost a week after he overpowered a guard and fled in his pickup.
John William Roland III, 33, was arrested after police negotiated with him at the motel for an hour, police Lt. Tom Earnhardt said.
During the negotiations, Roland made threats on himself and toward police, but he eventually gave up peacefully, Earnhardt said.
Roland was tracked to the Red Roof Inn through a stolen credit card, said Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Larry Todd.
Roland was serving a life term for shooting to death a former roommate. He had been in prison since 1993.
