Alleged Meat Plant Tampering Probed
Federal authorities are investigating allegations of tampering at an Indiana meat processing plant that resulted in the voluntary recall of 266,000 pounds of ham products, a spokesman for IBP, the company that owns the plant, said.
The FBI has launched an inquiry after IBP determined that someone in the Logansport, Ind., plant put metal objects in the meat, said Gary Mickelson, a spokesman for IBP, which was acquired last year by Tyson Foods Inc.
R.D. McGregor, president of Cumberland Gap Provisions, one of the distributors involved in the recall, said IBP told his company that an IBP employee may have placed nails in the meat.
The ham was distributed in Kentucky, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and Ohio, the USDA said.
Tyson shares rose 16 cents to $11.55 in NYSE trading.
