From Times Wire Reports

More than 30 inmates were killed in a Brazilian prison riot in an Amazon town as rival gangs fought with knives and guns after a failed escape attempt, prison authorities said.

The deadly rebellion at the Urso Branco prison on the outskirts of the town of Porto Velho started as members of the rival gangs were placed in the same pavilion after trying to escape, a prison spokeswoman said.

She said more than 30 inmates had been killed as the gangs attacked each other, although a final count would most likely not be ready until today.
