Sen. John B. Breaux said he will not run for governor of Louisiana, ending months of speculation and leaving the race to succeed Gov. Mike Foster wide open.

Breaux, a moderate Democrat, had said for months that he was considering a run next year to succeed Foster, a popular Republican barred from seeking a third consecutive term.

“After weighing all the advice and counsel, I think that I can be most effective in helping Louisiana grow and prosper by continuing to serve in the U.S. Senate,” Breaux said. “Louisiana has a 30-year investment in me that cannot be discounted.”
