Rose Parade Reprise for ‘Guiding Good Times’

Re “A Wave of Patriotism on Parade in Pasadena,” Jan. 2: I witnessed the breakdown of the “Guiding Good Times” float, the first-time entry of Guide Dogs for the Blind, during Pasadena’s Tournament of Roses parade, and was struck by the irony that a tow truck was needed to “lead” the stricken float to safety. I was also saddened to read that the float did not complete the parade route, especially since two of its riders--Michael Hingson and his guide dog Roselle--had successfully escaped from the 78th floor of the World Trade Center back on Sept. 11.

Given their ordeal, it seems obvious that Hingson and Roselle should be invited back to ride in next year’s parade. I’d think Tournament officials would be eager to demonstrate that “floating” down Colorado Boulevard on New Year’s Day is far easier than a blind person’s escape from a high-rise fire.
