Schedule Gets a Lot Tougher

UCLA can’t spend much time in the glow of two victories each over Washington and Washington State to begin Pacific 10 Conference play.

The schedule quickly becomes rigorous.

After facing USC at the Forum on Thursday, the Bruins (11-2 overall) play host to No. 2 Kansas Saturday in a nonconference game.

After that comes a trip to Arizona State and Arizona, followed by home games against No. 12 Stanford and California.

Then UCLA must visit Oregon, which has defeated Arizona twice.

Victories at home by double-figure margins over Washington and Washington State during the last three days have not given Coach Steve Lavin a false sense of security.

“We are very concerned. USC is way out in front of us in terms of how they play as a team,” he said. “If we play like we did this weekend, it will be a long, long season for the Bruins.”

Michael Fey apparently will not join the UCLA team this season. The winter quarter begins today, and the freshman center from Olympia, Wash., has not received a qualifying score on either the SAT or ACT. Fey, who has signed a letter of intent, will continue to take the tests and attempt to enroll in the fall.

The Bruins will visit the City of Hope Cancer Center today at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday vs. USC (12-2, 4-0 in Pacific 10), 7:30 p.m. at the Forum--The Bruins have won 13 of 14 against the Trojans since 1995, losing only at the Sports Arena in 2000. The venue is the Forum because the Sports Arena is being used for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. UCLA has not played at the Forum since it was used for the Pacific 10 Conference tournament in 1989.
