From Times Staff Reports

A private plane with crippled landing gear landed safely Friday night at John Wayne Airport after the pilot circled for almost three hours to burn off fuel and tried to lower a stuck wheel.

Airport spokeswoman Christie McDaniel said the Cessna 172 RG landed at 7:43 p.m. and skidded about 2,700 feet before stopping in a grassy area. The pilot and two passengers were not hurt, she said.

The runway, which is also used by commercial jets, was closed for 30 minutes as crews removed the plane and some debris. Some arriving flights were delayed but none were diverted, McDaniel said.
