Final Aid Payment Made for Parity of Pastors’ Pay
A special fund launched in 1964 by the Methodist Church to raise the salaries and pensions of black and Latino pastors has made its final payment, ending a $23-million campaign to help integrate the church.
The fund was initiated in anticipation of a merger with the Evangelical United Brethren Church, which occurred in 1968, forming the United Methodist Church. The fund was designed to help compensate pastors who were members of two segregated conferences.
The last payment of $11,000 was made late last year to churches in Mississippi, marking the end of the Temporary General Aid Fund.
