Moseley Gets His First Win

Olympic champion Jonny Moseley of the United States revived his season Friday by winning a World Cup moguls race at Saint-Lary-Piau, France, four weeks before the Winter Games.

World champion Kari Traa of Norway won the women’s event for her third victory in four races this season.

In recording his first World Cup victory this season, Moseley earned 27.28 points of a possible 30. Sweden’s Fredrik Fortkord was second, followed by Canada’s Ryan Johnson.

Among the women, Traa finished with 27.42 points. Marina Cherkasova of Russia was second and Shannon Bahrke of the United States was third.

Hilde Gerg of Germany won the first of back-to-back women’s World Cup downhills on the tight Zwoelferkogl course at Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria.

Gerg finished in 1 minute 21.14 seconds for her second win this season and 13th in her career.

Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden, who started in the 20th spot, was second in 1:21.26. Isolde Kostner of Italy, leader in the downhill World Cup standings this season, was third in 1:21.29.

Among U.S. racers, Picabo Street was 10th in 1:21.85, followed by Kirstin Clark in 11th (1:21.88) and Caroline Lalive in 20th (1:22.40).

John Bauer won the pursuit race to all but clinch a spot on his third Olympic team, while Katerina Hanusova had an easy time in the women’s pursuit in the U.S. Cross Country Championships.

The Olympic team will be announced Jan. 20. The championships conclude Sunday with the men’s 50K and women’s 30K classic technique races.

World Cup leader Pavel Rostovtsev of Russia earned his third biathlon victory of the season and second this week when he won a 12.5-kilometer pursuit event at Oberhof, Germany.

In the women’s 10-kilometer pursuit, Magdalena Forsberg of Sweden overcame stormy conditions to earn her 40th biathlon World Cup victory. She leads overall with 393 points.

Felix Gottwald of Austria gained his fifth World Cup victory of the season, edging Ronny Ackermann of Germany by 32 seconds in a Nordic combined event at Val Di Fiemme, Italy.

Todd Lodwick of Steamboat Springs, Colo., finished 11th, 1:18.5 behind Gottwald. He is fourth in the overall standings with 832 points.

Swiss ski jumper Simon Ammann crashed during practice for a World Cup meet at Willingen, Germany, sustaining a concussion, facial cuts and bruises.
