Selanne Beats the Clock, Avalanche

Teemu Selanne scored with three seconds left in overtime, lifting the San Jose Sharks over the Colorado Avalanche, 1-0, Tuesday night at Denver.

San Jose’s Evgeni Nabokov stopped 38 shots and Colorado’s Patrick Roy had 21 saves.

Despite the loss, the Avalanche gained one point and moved into a first-place tie with Edmonton in the Northwest Division.

Vancouver 5, Pittsburgh 2--Mario Lemieux scored his first goal since returning from hip surgery, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the Canucks at Vancouver, Canada.

Lemieux scored on a power play midway through the third period.

Daniel Sedin had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who got goals from four other players.

Detroit 2, Phoenix 2--Brett Hull scored his second goal with 2:19 left in regulation at Phoenix, and Detroit extended its unbeaten streak to six games.

It was Hull’s 15th goal this season and 664th of his career.

Daniel Briere scored Phoenix’s goals.

New York Islanders 3, Calgary 1--Adrian Aucoin scored two goals at Calgary, Canada, ending a 40-game scoreless streak.

Michael Peca had an empty-net goal for the Islanders, who ended an eight-game losing streak against Calgary dating to 1996.

Philadelphia 4, Ottawa 1--Jeremy Roenick had a goal and two assists at Ottawa, Canada, and the Flyers extended their winning streak to six games.

Roman Cechmanek made 36 saves for the Flyers, who got goals from Justin Williams, Simon Gagne and Kim Johnsson.

Radek Bonk scored for Ottawa.

Carolina 2, Minnesota 0--Aaron Ward and Bates Battaglia scored at Raleigh, N.C., and Arturs Irbe recorded his 32nd career shutout as the Hurricanes ended a three-game home skid.

Irbe stopped 22 shots.

Atlanta 3, Toronto 2--Dany Heatley scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Milan Hnilicka made 40 saves, and the Thrashers ended a five-game road losing streak.

Rookie Ilya Kovalchuk and Lubos Bartecko scored for the Thrashers, who extended their unbeaten streak to four games.

Alexei Ponikarovsky and Robert Reichel scored for the Maple Leafs.

Tampa Bay 5, New Jersey 4--Zdeno Ciger scored his third goal of the game at 1:25 of overtime to lift the Lightning at East Rutherford, N.J..

Vincent Lecavalier had a goal and three assists, and Nikolai Khabibulin came off the bench in the third period and stopped 20 of 21 shots for Tampa Bay.

New Jersey’s Patrik Elias forced the overtime with a goal at 7:58 of the third period.

St. Louis 3, Edmonton 2--Chris Pronger and Keith Tkachuk scored power-play goals at St. Louis and the Blues extended their winning streak to six games.

The Blues won for the ninth time in 10 games.

Peter Forsberg agreed to a $9.5-million, one-year contract extension with Colorado, but the club will have the final say on whether the injured center plays for the Avalanche next season.

Forsberg, who would have earned $11 million including incentives this season, the final year of a three-year contract, has been sidelined since last year’s playoffs by injuries.

He had surgery last week to repair tendons in his left foot and will be sidelined at least four months.
