Freeway Offramp Exit Numbers Are Right On

It’s about time Caltrans saw the light and decided to put exit numbers on our freeways (Jan. 16). Here are some other things it needs to do: 1) Make the mile marker signs on the side of the freeway more visible; e.g., reflective green--just like almost every other state. This can easily be combined with the emergency call boxes, which now have a secret code showing the mileage from the county line.

2) Post a telephone number to call for highway obstacles, hazards and problems that do not qualify as emergencies (Oregon does this now).

3) In less-populated areas (I-5 and U.S. 395), post signs with radio station frequencies for broadcast of traffic and weather advisories.

If drivers can’t distinguish between El Camino Real, Camino de Estrella and Camino Capistrano, we’re probably all a lot safer with them not driving at all.

It is wonderful to see that California has finally caught up to the rest of the free world and is going to number the exit signs on the freeways. We are so behind everyone else it is pathetic.

I go to visit my daughter in Washington state and have no problem finding my exits; why we are so far behind everyone else is beyond my imagination. Thank you, Caltrans, and whoever else is responsible for this great idea. Here’s hoping they don’t have to do a study that will take three years before implementing it.
