About 45 people were killed and hundreds of thousands fled eastern Congo after a volcano erupted Thursday. The devastating lava flow forced many into neighboring Rwanda.

U.N. officials in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, estimated the number of dead at 45, as lava poured down the slopes of Mt. Nyiragongo.

Overnight, the horizon was one long stretch of flames and smoke.

In Gisenyi, just across the border from Congo, displaced people lined the roadsides, lying down to sleep anywhere they could find a patch of ground.

Military sources in Gisenyi said as many as 300,000 people may have fled across the border to Rwanda. By daybreak today, the volcano appeared to have quieted.
