Twain Spotting

Ken Burns did adults a favor with his two-part Mark Twain documentary (“Storytelling Stars in Twain Special,” by Howard Rosenberg, Jan. 14). Most of us read Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn at an early age. To be truly appreciated, they and other Twain books should be reread at an older age.

The man was most unusual, ahead of his time in recognizing the unequal treatment women and minorities endured. Burns did great overviews in his “The Civil War” and “Baseball” multi-episode documentaries. In the two Twain segments, Burns gave us depth of character and insight into a great writer.
