Karzai Begins Visit With a Stop at Mecca

Hamid Karzai began his first tour abroad as prime minister of Afghanistan, setting out on a pilgrimage to Islam’s holy shrine in Mecca.
The prime minister is scheduled to meet Saudi King Fahd in Riyadh, the capital, today.
A Karzai spokesman said he will then travel to Tokyo for a two-day donors’ conference on Afghanistan that begins Monday. Later this month, he heads to the United States to meet with President Bush.
