Tamil Tiger Rebels Extend Cease-Fire

From Times Wire Reports

Tamil Tiger rebels fighting for a separate state in Sri Lanka said they would extend a cease-fire in the latest step in a peace process that began with the election of a new government six weeks ago.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam also said they hoped the government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe would respond favorably to the move.

The government had matched a one-month truce declared by the Tigers on Dec. 24--the first in seven years to be observed by both sides--raising hopes of Norwegian-brokered peace talks to end nearly two decades of ethnic fighting.
