Cypresses, Pines to Be Axed to Save Butterfly

About 175 Monterey cypress and pine trees in the Marin Headlands must be cut down next month to improve living conditions for the endangered mission blue butterfly.

The National Park Service said the trees, planted by the military decades ago, have overtaken vegetation such as coastal scrub and perennial lupines, which the butterflies rely on to reproduce.
