Clear Channel Communications Inc. and other radio companies should be investigated to determine whether they are exceeding federal ownership limits or illegally pressuring recording artists who want airplay, a U.S. lawmaker said.
Clear Channel spokeswoman Rebecca Allmon said the company, the biggest owner of U.S. radio stations, behaves fairly and legally.
Rep. Howard L. Berman (D-Mission Hills) said the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission should investigate allegations reported by a trade publication that Clear Channel is using shell companies to exceed limits on station ownership and pressuring performers to pay or buy advertising in return for air time.
Shares of San Antonio-based Clear Channel fell 5 cents to close at $46.95 on the New York Stock Exchange.
