Strong Finish Propels Duke

Jason Williams scored 27 points, Carlos Boozer had 25 and No. 1-ranked Duke shot 68% in the second half to beat No. 7 Virginia, 94-81, Sunday night at Durham, N.C.

The Blue Devils scored 52 points in the second half.

“For us to do that says a lot about our conditioning and our physical state and mental toughness,” forward Mike Dunleavy said.

Virginia committed 31 fouls and the Blue Devils made 30 of 46 free throws.

The Blue Devils (18-1, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their sixth game in a row.

Roger Mason Jr. scored 15 points for Virginia (14-3, 4-3).

North Carolina 87, Clemson 69--Adam Boone had 23 points and 10 rebounds at Clemson, S.C., and the Tar Heels (6-11, 2-5 ACC) ended a six-game losing streak, their longest in 41 seasons.

Jamark McKnight led the Tigers (11-10, 2-6) with 21 points.

WOMEN’S TOP 25

No. 2 Tennessee 66, No. 22 Auburn 53--Kara Lawson scored 23 points and had eight rebounds at Auburn, Ala., and the Volunteers (17-1, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) won their sixth in a row.

Le’Coe Willingham led Auburn (14-6, 2-5) with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

No. 5 Duke 102, Florida State 80--Sheana Mosch had 24 points, and freshman Monique Currie had 21 for the Blue Devils (17-3, 9-0 ACC) at Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida State (11-9, 2-7) lost for the seventh time in eight games.

No. 6 Vanderbilt 64, Louisiana State 53--Chantelle Anderson’s 28 points and Zuzi Klimesova’s 24 sparked Vanderbilt (19-4, 5-2 SEC) at Baton Rouge, La.

Alysha Smith scored 16 points for the Tigers (11-7, 4-3).

Arkansas 74, No. 7 South Carolina 46--India Lewis and Dana Cherry each had 17 points for Arkansas (11-8, 2-5 SEC) at Fayetteville, Ark.

South Carolina (17-3, 5-2) committed 26 turnovers.

Penn State 63, No. 9 Wisconsin 49--The Lady Lions (13-8, 5-3 Big Ten) got 16 points apiece from Kelly Mazzante and Rashana Barnes to key the upset at State College, Pa.

The Badgers (16-4, 7-3) have lost three in a row after a 15-game winning streak.

No. 10 Purdue 82, Iowa 68--Mary Jo Noon had 19 points and 11 rebounds at West Lafayette, Ind., and the Boilermakers (16-3, 7-2 Big Ten) set a school record with their 22nd consecutive home victory.

Kristi Faulkner scored 13 points for Iowa (13-6, 6-3).

No. 11 Kansas State 76, No. 12 Texas Tech 63--Nicole Ohlde had 24 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for Kansas State (19-2, 7-1 Big 12) in front of 13,340 at Manhattan, Kan.

Jia Perkins scored 24 points for Texas Tech (12-6, 4-4).

No. 18 Florida 73, No. 17 Georgia 64--Vanessa Hayden and Monique Cardenas each scored 19 points for the Gators (15-5, 5-2 SEC) at Gainesville, Fla.

Christi Thomas scored 21 points for the Bulldogs (14-5, 3-4).

No. 21 North Carolina 79, Virginia 64--Coretta Brown made four three-point baskets and had 22 points at Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Tar Heels (12-8, 5-4 ACC) ended a three-game skid.

Virginia (14-7, 4-5) led, 51-46, with 12:19 left after Telisha Quarles scored 10 consecutive points.

Quarles finished with 23 points.

No. 23 Minnesota 75, Indiana 60--Lindsay Whalen scored 22 points at Minneapolis, assuring the Golden Gophers (15-4, 5-3 Big Ten) their first winning record in eight seasons.

The game at Williams Arena attracted a crowd of 11,389, a Minnesota women’s record.

Jill Chapman scored 26 points for Indiana (9-11, 3-6).

No. 25 Old Dominion 68, James Madison 51--Lucienne Berthieu had 32 points and 13 rebounds for Old Dominion (13-5, 10-0 Colonial Athletic Assn.) at Harrisonburg, Va.
