‘Mind’ and ‘Bedroom’ Top SAG Nominees

“A Beautiful Mind” and “In the Bedroom” each received three nominations Tuesday for the Screen Actors Guild awards. The casts of both films were nominated along with “Beautiful Mind’s” Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, and “In the Bedroom’s” Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson.

There were several surprises among the feature film nominations. Kevin Kline for “Life as a House” and Sean Penn for “I Am Sam”--both considered dark horses--received outstanding actor nods. Wilkinson, who was shut out of the Golden Globes for “In the Bedroom,” also received an outstanding actor nomination. And Dakota Fanning, Penn’s 7-year-old co-star in “I Am Sam,” received a nomination for outstanding female actor in a supporting role.

Another surprise was the nomination of Connelly, who won the best supporting actress Golden Globe for “A Beautiful Mind,” in the outstanding female actor category. A SAG spokesperson said that Universal submitted Connelly in this category. Last year, Benicio Del Toro, who won the Golden Globe and the Oscar for best supporting actor for “Traffic,” also found himself competing in the outstanding actor category for the Steven Soderbergh film. Del Toro ended up winning the SAG award over Tom Hanks for “Cast Away” and Crowe for “Gladiator.”

Judi Dench was nominated in two feature film categories--for female actor in a lead role for “Iris” and for female actor in a supporting role for “The Shipping News.”

Notably missing in the feature film category was Gene Hackman for “The Royal Tenenbaums.” Hackman recently received a Golden Globe, the AFI Award and the National Society of Film Critics honor for the offbeat dark comedy. Another Golden Globe winner, Nicole Kidman, also failed to receive a nomination from her peers for either “Moulin Rouge,” for which she received the Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical, or “The Others,” for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a drama.

Other performers absent from the list of nominees include Will Smith for “Ali,” Billy Bob Thornton for “The Man Who Wasn’t There” and “Monster’s Ball,” Naomi Watts for “Mulholland Drive,” Marisa Tomei for “In the Bedroom,” Kate Winslet for “Iris” and Steve Buscemi for “Ghost World.”

In the SAG TV categories, “The Sopranos,” “Six Feet Under,” “The West Wing,” “Sex & the City,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Frasier” and “Will & Grace” are among the series with multiple nominations.

Two randomly selected panels that represent 4,200 SAG members selected this year’s nominees.

Approximately 98,000 members of the guild will vote on all acting categories.

The SAG Awards will be presented March 10 in Los Angeles in a two-hour ceremony to be televised on TNT.
