Sasaki Doesn’t Feel Special After Losing

Kazuhiro Sasaki couldn’t quite get excited about the All-Star game, because this was a rare occasion when he didn’t feel like one.

Seattle’s star closer yielded only his second and third earned runs this season Sunday, and the Colorado Rockies rallied in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Mariners, 4-3, at Seattle.

Sasaki (2-2) blew his fourth save opportunity in 22 attempts, and Seattle had its five-game winning streak end on the day Sasaki and teammates Ichiro Suzuki and Freddy Garcia were selected for the American League All-Star team.

“This should have been a happy day because I was picked for the All-Star game,” Sasaki said. “I’m just thinking about the loss today and I’m feeling really bad.”

Oakland 7, San Francisco 0--Tim Hudson pitched a five-hitter at Oakland for his third career shutout, and the Athletics won for the second time in six games. Hudson (6-7) won for the third time in four decisions. He retired 14 of 15 batters during one stretch en route to his first shutout since Sept. 9, 2000.

Kansas City 13, San Diego 1--Raul Ibanez singled, tripled, homered and drove in four runs for the second time in three days at Kansas City, Mo. The Padres lost for the seventh time in nine games. The Royals, after losing eight in a row, finished 5-1 in a six-game home stand.

Chicago Cubs 9, Chicago White Sox 2--Matt Clement shut down the White Sox and Mark Bellhorn homered from both sides of the plate, and the Cubs avoided a sweep at Comiskey Park. Clement (6-5) gave up two runs and six hits over eight-plus innings, and matched his career high with 12 strikeouts.

Toronto 7, Montreal 5--Carlos Delgado hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning in what was possibly the final game between the Canadian teams. The Blue Jays improved to 18-13 against the Expos, who could be contracted or moved after the season.

Minnesota 4, Milwaukee 3--Luis Vizcaino walked Dustan Mohr to force in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning at Minneapolis.

Denny Hocking started the rally with a single against Glendon Rusch (5-6). One out later, Matthew LeCroy singled. Vizcaino relieved and struck out Torii Hunter. But he walked Bobby Kielty and walked Mohr on a 3-and-2 pitch to force in Hocking.

Pittsburgh 6, Detroit 2--The Pirates finished interleague play by winning two of three from the Tigers at Detroit after going 1-8 in their previous games against the AL.

Philadelphia 8, Baltimore 5--The Phillies rallied from four runs behind at Camden Yards. Robert Person (3-4) pitched five innings for his 50th career victory. Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his 200th career save and 20th this season.

New York Yankees 8, New York Mets 0--Andy Pettitte (2-2) pitched a three-hitter to win for the first time since April 5. Alfonso Soriano and John Vander Wal each drove in two runs for the Yankees, who won two of three in the Subway Series at Yankee Stadium. The teams split six games this season.

Tampa Bay 5, Florida 4--Brent Abernathy singled home Steve Cox with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning at St. Petersburg, Fla.
