The American Institute of Architects/Los Angeles will host the Venezia Home Tour, offering viewers an opportunity to view beautifully designed modern houses in Venice. The self-driven tour will showcase architecture by Holger & Yuriko Shubert, Whitney Sander, Richard Clemenson Associates and Steven Ehrlich Architects. Attendees will get maps, driving directions and information on each home. Docents and the architects will be available at each stop.

On July 14, 1789, Frenchmen stormed and seized the Bastille, setting off the French Revolution. Given two centuries, any holiday can become an excuse to barbecue. Proof? The Bastille Day French Festival at the Pacific Design Center. The event brings together all the fun French things: food and wine, high fashion, can-can dancers. There will also be waiters’ races, live entertainment and an authentic French market.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rockers the Doors are due to play an L.A.-area arena in September, but the Los Angeles Library’s Soundings Summer Performance Series offers a unique and more intimate opportunity for fans to hear the band’s keyboard player, Ray Manzarek. “Ray Manzarek and Michael McClure: The Third Mind” will fill the afternoon with words and music--poet and playwright McClure’s readings set to music played by Manzarek.

Paintings by Spanish master Bartolome Esteban Murillo go on view as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosts the first U.S. retrospective of its kind. “Bartolome Esteban Murillo (1617-1682): Paintings From American Collections” will feature more than 30 of his works from the golden age of Spanish painting, including religious subjects, scenes from everyday life and portraiture.
