Teen Guilty of Exposing Sex Partner to HIV
An HIV-infected college student, whose arrest on charges of having unprotected sex spread fear on campus, pleaded guilty Thursday and could get up to 15 years in prison.
Nikko Briteramos, a 19-year-old from Chicago, is the first person prosecuted in South Dakota under a 2000 law against knowingly exposing someone to the AIDS virus. The arrest prompted the testing of 237 people for AIDS.
Sentencing was set for Aug. 20.
Prosecutors said Briteramos had learned in March that he was HIV-positive and yet had unprotected sex with a woman in April. She has tested negative.
But two other people in and around the small town were diagnosed with the virus.
