Panel OKs Adelstein for FCC

Jonathan Adelstein, the Democratic nominee for an opening on the Federal Communications Commission, sailed through his long-delayed Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday, saying he will focus on accelerating the roll-out of Internet broadband and providing telecommunications services to rural and underserved areas.

Adelstein, 39, a top telecommunications aide to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), avoided questions about his specific views, but said the telecommunications industry was in the midst of a crisis and vowed to help rebuild confidence.

Adelstein is expected to be a voice for rural America on the commission. The South Dakota native’s nomination has been blocked since last year due to squabbling largely unrelated to his record or qualifications. He is expected to easily win Senate approval.
