From Times Wire Reports

The Bush administration plans to open more federal land in the Rocky Mountain states to natural gas drilling and speed the approval process for drilling permits, a top Interior Department official said.

The White House has called for a significant boost in U.S. natural gas production as part of its national energy plan to help meet expected demand from new power plants.

Environmentalists fear the administration’s plan will open wilderness areas in Western states to drilling, in a change in policy from the Clinton administration.
