Kings Get Rangers’ Armstrong in Trade

The Kings acquired center Derek Armstrong from the New York Rangers on Tuesday for a conditional selection in the 2003 NHL entry draft.

The Kings agreed to terms with Armstrong on a one-year contract with a club option for a second year, General Manager Dave Taylor said.

Armstrong had 17 goals and 36 assists in 44 games last season for SC Bern of the Swiss League. Before that, the 6-foot, 195-pounder played for the American Hockey League’s Hartford Wolf Pack.

Armstrong, 29, was drafted by the New York Islanders in the sixth round in 1992. He has appeared in 86 games with the Rangers, Islanders and Ottawa.

The Kings also signed forward Pavel Rosa to a two-year contract, agreed to terms with restricted free-agent forward Brad Chartrand on a one-year contract with a club option for a second year, and agreed to terms with restricted free-agent defenseman Richard Seeley on a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Rosa played in Finland last season, Chartrand played 46 games with the Kings and Seeley played with Manchester of the AHL.

Forward Keith Tkachuk has accepted St. Louis’ $8.3-million qualifying offer for next season, satisfying the team’s priority of re-signing the restricted free agent.

San Jose defenseman Marcus Ragnarsson and forward Niklas Sundstrom have filed for arbitration, but goalie Evgeni Nabokov decided against it.

American Tim Montgomery defeated Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis in the men’s 100 meters in the DN Galan meet at Stockholm. Both were timed in 10.08 seconds.

Svetlana Feofanova of Russia set the women’s European pole vault record, clearing 15 feet 8 1/4 inches, the second-best effort by a woman.

American Gail Devers won the 100 hurdles in a stadium-record 12.42, beating Jamaica’s Bridgette Foster by 0.07.

Houston signed second-round draft pick Chester Pitts to a four-year, $2.3-million contract, agent Jack Bechta said. Pitts was an offensive tackle at San Diego State.... Former Detroit Lion defensive lineman Alonzo Spellman was arrested after a report of a home invasion and reckless driving in Dearborn, Mich. He was released on $600 bond.... Duke quarterback Chris Wispelwey has been charged with driving while impaired Sunday at Chapel Hill, N.C.... Taylor Stubblefield, who led Purdue with 73 receptions for 910 yards last season, is recovering from a fractured skull suffered when he fell from a fence July 4, The Indianapolis Star reported Tuesday.

Brian Agler resigned as coach of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx but will remain with the team as general manager. He was replaced by assistant Heidi VanDerveer, a former coach of Sacramento.

Issac Jimison of Orangevale, Calif., shot a course-record 65 that earned him medalist honors in the 2002 U.S. Amateur Public Links tournament at Washington, Mich. Jimison’s 68-65--133 put him three strokes ahead of Eric Jorgensen of Grandville, Mich., (68-68--136).

The top 64 golfers after two rounds of medal play advance to match play. Jay Choi of Cerritos (tied for seventh at 138), Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights (tied for 19th at 141) and Charlie Smith of Valencia (tied for 61st at 146) qualified.
