PARAGUAY
*
President Luis Gonzalez Macchi announced that he had lifted the state of emergency in Paraguay, saying order had been restored after two days of deadly protests.
“Nothing good can come from violence,” Gonzalez Macchi said in a broadcast statement. He also mourned the dead and injured, who were “cannon fodder” for what he called a frustrated coup attempt.
Two people died and more than 50 were injured in street protests by thousands of demonstrators who called for Gonzalez Macchi to resign over his economic policies.
