The 40-foot-high monument with a granite surface polished to mirror brightness reflects the names of fallen astronauts skyward.

The “space mirror” design, chosen from 756 entries, was praised for its poetic use of technology.

Holt also helped design the Energy Services Facility at UCLA, the Paramount Pictures Film & Tape Library and the San Jose Repertory Theatre.

Born in England and trained at the University of Manchester, he moved to the United States in 1976 and three years later formed a partnership with architect Marc Hinshaw.

Their firm quickly developed a reputation for its multidisciplinary approach in planning and designing for science and industry, the arts and education.
